Behind the scenes on DIY SOS with Jennifer Gardner

We recently asked our joyful Twitter followers about interesting and challenging experiences they've had as a painter and decorator. Up popped Jennifer who said: 'I've got to say being a part of DIY SOS twice was the most interesting (experience) but also humbling and (it was) an honour to work on.' We thought her story was intriguing, so we wanted to know more! What was the atmosphere like whilst you were helping out on DIY SOS? "The atmosphere in the height of summer on my first (appearance) was hot but humbling! I then went on to doing my second (show) in the October. (There were) so many giggles and friendships being made when under each other's feet. Every trade in the same rooms at the same time... I'm stripping off woodchip on a hop up while electricians are between my legs and nearly hitting me in the head with wires at the same time. It's so funny! Eating all our meals together, our team breaks with cake scoffing! Great camaraderie!” What transformations were you a part of? "I can't say too much as the shows haven't been aired yet but as a decorator I was involved in the prep, stripping paper off, and sanding, to priming and painting all the rooms and furniture.” During the days you helped out, which role did you enjoy the most? "I enjoyed every part of being in the decorating teams but seeing the families' faces and hearing them speak to us all after was the most enjoyable. Seeing how overwhelmed they were and so thankful (I had many tears). It's so humbling.” Did you and the team encounter any hiccups or did everything run smoothly? "I personally didn't but if anything did come up there were around 10 of each trade to sort any hiccups out.” Finally, what is Nick Knowles really like behind-the-scenes? "Nick is great! He gets involved, he joins in the banter but he's, as you know, the presenter, so he has his serious moments on camera getting across to the public how important it is to do what we are doing. He's the first point of contact with the family and I think he does an amazing job. I had a few chats with Nick on camera and I'm hoping one of them isn't aired as I look a hot sweaty mess! These were the most humbling experiences of my life and I hope to be part of more in the future. It was an honour.” Wow, it sounds like the experience will live with you forever! Thank you for your time. It was a pleasure to speak with Jennifer about her amazing times on DIY SOS and we're incredibly excited to see the episodes when these are aired.
